Introduction
The funny thing about grip socks- sometimes called non-slip grip socks- is that most people don't think about them until the moment they need them. Maybe it's your first Pilates class. Maybe it's the polished hardwood floor you nearly skated across carrying your morning coffee. Or maybe you're simply looking for a little more confidence in your footing.
Whatever brought you here, you're in the right place. This guide covers everything you need to know—from how they work to how to choose the perfect pair.
What are grip socks?
If you've ever walked into a Pilates studio and noticed everyone wearing socks with tiny rubber grips on the bottom, you might have wondered what makes them so special.
The short answer? They help you stay steady.
The longer answer is much more interesting.
Grip socks have become a staple in Pilates, barre, yoga, and even everyday life because they offer extra stability without sacrificing comfort. Whether you're taking your very first reformer class, practicing yoga at home, recovering from an injury, or simply want a little more confidence on slippery floors, the right pair of grip socks can make all the difference.
The grips create friction with the floor to help reduce slipping.
How do grip socks work?
Grip socks are wonderfully simple.
Most grip socks are made from soft blends of cotton, polyester, nylon, and spandex. The grips themselves are typically made from silicone or rubber that is bonded to the sole of the sock.
Instead of relying on the smooth fabric of an ordinary sock to make contact with the floor, grip socks use small silicone or rubber grips on the sole to create friction. That extra friction helps reduce slipping when you're standing, balancing, stretching, or moving between positions.
Think about trying to push a shopping cart across ice versus across pavement. The pavement gives your feet something to hold onto.
Grip socks work the same way.
The grips don't glue you to the floor—they simply give your feet a little extra purchase so you can move with more confidence.
Why do people wear grip socks?
People wear grip socks for one simple reason:
They help your feet stay where you intended to put them.
Whether you're pressing against the shoulder blocks of a reformer, holding a downward dog in yoga, walking across polished hardwood floors, or recovering after surgery, grip socks provide extra traction when you need it most.
Many Pilates and barre studios require them for both safety and hygiene, while some yoga studios recommend them depending on the style of class.
From there, the reasons people choose grip socks expand far beyond the fitness studio. You'll find them in hospitals, physical therapy clinics, dance studios, hotels, and homes—anywhere a little extra confidence underfoot is welcome.
A Nurse’s Perspective
During my years working as a registered nurse, one thing I never wanted to see was a patient suffer a preventable fall.
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, and hospitals work incredibly hard to reduce them. The last thing anyone wants is for a patient to leave the hospital with an injury they didn't arrive with.
That experience is one of the reasons I appreciate grip socks so much. They aren't glamorous—but they can make a meaningful difference.
That said...
Hospital-issued grip socks have never exactly been known for their fashion sense.
If "hospitalized grandma chic" is your aesthetic, by all means wear them.
But if you'd prefer something with the same practical purpose and a little more personality...
Well...
That's why Ruby exists.
One small layer of support that helps you move with confidence.
Who should wear grip socks?
One of my favorite things about grip socks is that they're useful for so many different people. They aren't just for Pilates studios anymore. Chances are, if you've ever wished for a little more confidence under your feet, there's probably a place for grip socks in your life.
- Pilates enthusiasts
If you love reformer Pilates, grip socks are practically part of the uniform. Many studios require them, and once you've experienced the extra stability they provide, you'll probably wonder how you ever practiced without them. - Yoga students
Whether you're flowing through Sun Salutations or attempting a pose that has you questioning your life choices, a little extra grip can help you feel more stable and confident. - Expecting moms
Pregnancy asks a lot of your body—including your balance. Grip socks can provide a little extra confidence on smooth floors when your center of gravity has other plans. - Hospital patients
As a nurse, I can't skip this one. Preventing falls is a huge priority in healthcare, and something as simple as wearing your grip socks can help keep you safer during your recovery. - Older adults
Sometimes confidence is everything. A little extra traction around the house can make everyday movement feel more secure. - Physical therapy patients
Recovery isn't always easy, but grip socks can help you focus on rebuilding strength instead of worrying about your footing. - Dancers and barre enthusiasts
Precise movement starts with a stable foundation. Grip socks help you feel connected to the floor while still allowing you to move naturally. - Hardwood floor survivors
We've all had that cartoon moment where one foot goes one way and the other goes the opposite direction. Grip socks won't make you invincible—but they can make those moments a lot less likely. - Travelers
Whether you're padding around a hotel room, an Airbnb, or a vacation rental, grip socks make unfamiliar floors feel just a little more comfortable. - Parents
Whether you're carrying a sleeping baby, stepping over toys, or racing to answer "Mom!" for the hundredth time that day, a little extra grip never hurts.
Perfect for Pilates lovers, travelers, patients, moms, and so many more!
What are the benefits?
- Better balance
It's hard to focus on your movement when you're worried about slipping. Grip socks give your feet a little extra traction so you can spend less time thinking about your footing and more time enjoying whatever you're doing—whether that's a Pilates class, yoga practice, or simply walking across the kitchen floor. - More confidence
We're big about confidence here at Ruby. There's something reassuring about knowing your footing is secure. It's one less thing to think about, leaving you free to focus on your workout, your recovery, or simply moving through your day with a little more confidence. - Improved hygiene
Let's be honest—shared studio floors have seen some things. Grip socks create a barrier between your feet and the floor, helping keep your feet cleaner while being considerate of the people sharing the space with you. Plus, no one wants to touch something someone else's crusty bare foot has been in contact with. It's just. not. right. 😵💫😂 - Greater stability
As a nurse, this is the benefit I appreciate most. Extra traction can help reduce the chance of slipping on smooth surfaces, making movement feel more stable and secure. Any time someone can avoid a preventable slip or fall is a win in my book. - Warmth
If you're anything like me and your feet are perpetually cold, grip socks solve two problems at once. They keep your feet cozy while giving you the traction you need—especially in chilly Pilates studios or on cold hardwood floors. - Everyday comfort
The best socks are the ones you forget you're wearing. A well-made pair of grip socks should feel soft, supportive, and comfortable enough that you'll find yourself reaching for them again and again—even when you're not headed to a workout.
Extra traction gives you confidence in movement, balance, and everyday life.
Do you really need them for Pilates?
If you're attending a reformer Pilates class, the answer is usually yes. Most studios require grip socks for safety and hygiene. If you're practicing at home, they're not mandatory—but you'll probably appreciate the extra stability they provide.
Not to mention the grip is essential to maintain good form and posture. Good form and posture is key to make sure you get the benefits of your workout.
Whether you choose to use a reformer, mat, Cadillac, chair, or barrel, grip socks are essential to your quality of workout, not to mention your safety.
(As an aside, read my love letter to Pilates to find out why I love it so much!)
How should grip socks fit?
Just a heads up: grip socks are NOT compression socks. Maybe someday we will get around to making compression socks with grip, but we aren’t there yet haha.
Your grip socks should be well-fitted. No slipping. No bunching. Just a lovely hug on your foot, reassuring you that you’re safe and supported.
If your socks slide around on your feet, your feet will slide around inside your socks—and that defeats the whole purpose.
Crew vs ankle grip socks
If you're wondering which style is "better," the answer is honestly neither.
Crew socks give a little more coverage and can make more of a statement with your outfit.
Ankle socks disappear a bit more and are great if you prefer a lower-profile look.
Both offer the same grip underneath, so your choice really comes down to comfort and personal style.
If you're taking classes several times a week, many people end up owning both.
Caring for grip socks
Caring for your grip socks is simple: machine wash on cold with like colors. No bleach or ironing. Ideally let air dry (to preserve the silicone or rubber grips), but if you’re in a rush tumble dry low. That’s it! Simple and straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions![]()
Can you wear shoes with grip socks?
Some people wear them in their normal sneakers, but I have found that the grip doesn’t stay intact for as long if that happens regularly.
Can you wash them?
Yes, absolutely. In fact, please do!
Do they wear out?
Yes, and the rate that they wear out is determined by how you care for them and how often they’re worn. Once you feel a little slip in your grip, it’s time to consider buying new ones.
Can you wear them every day?
Absolutely! Just make sure to wash them in between for hygienic purposes. Unlike Ruby’s compression socks, these socks don’t have permanent antimicrobial technology, so they will start stinking if you don’t care for them properly.
Can they replace slippers?
They’re different experiences.
Are grip socks worth it?
As someone who has done Pilates religiously for the last five years, I can answer this with a resounding YES. Especially if you find a quality pair that fits your practice and your style, you’ve struck gold.
Do grip socks stretch out?
Potentially, but that hasn’t been my personal experience. In the event that they do, it’s probably time to buy a new pair. As stated earlier: if your socks slide around on your feet, your feet will slide around inside your socks—and that defeats the whole purpose.
Can grip socks help prevent falls?
No one thing can definitively prevent a fall, but wearing grip socks to increase your stability will help minimize the chance that you do.
Can you wear grip socks if you're pregnant?
Most people are able to! If you have any concerns be sure to check with your doctor first.
Are there more resources at Ruby about grip socks?
Absolutely! Read this diary entry for more education and a giggle or two.
Final thoughts
Movement doesn't have to be dramatic to matter.
Sometimes it's a Pilates class.
Sometimes it's recovering after surgery.
Sometimes it's making coffee without nearly skating across the kitchen floor.
Whatever brings you to grip socks, I hope they've given you one more reason to move through the world with confidence.
Because that's really what grip socks are about.
Not perfection.
Not performance.
Just one small layer of support beneath your feet.
And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.
