There’s a reason we wanted this one to go first.

“Time Stand Still,” from Rush’s 1987 album Hold Your Fire, is about something remarkably simple and remarkably difficult: noticing your life while you’re still living it.

It’s about wanting, just for a moment, to slow the whole thing down long enough to appreciate the people, places, and ordinary days that will someday become memories. Not because anything extraordinary is happening, but because someday you’ll realize the ordinary parts were extraordinary, too.

That feels very Ruby.

There are bigger Rush songs. More obvious Rush songs. But that’s part of the point of the Record Shelf. We’re not here to choose the greatest hit. We’re here for the song that makes us feel something, notice something, wonder about something—or occasionally stop everything because did you HEAR that?

For our first record, this was the one.
